Relationships are complex.
Your therapist should understand that.
Shannon J. Greybar Milliken, LPC
Philosophy & Approach
I believe that relationships, like life, are shaped by both choice and circumstance — and that understanding what has unfolded over time is essential to deciding what comes next. I approach couples counseling as a space for reflection, curiosity, and learning, where partners can slow things down and better understand both themselves and one another.
My role is to walk alongside couples as they explore how patterns have developed, how communication is shaped by stress and transition, and what each partner needs in order to feel heard, understood, and respected. This work centers on connection, meaning-making, and thoughtful movement forward — together.
I offer a steady, grounded space for honest conversation and reflection, supporting couples as they navigate change, turning points, and periods of uncertainty. My approach is collaborative and paced, informed by narrative therapy and other evidence-based frameworks, and tailored to the unique goals and needs of each couple.
Professional Background
My professional career has been a river journey of its own — beginning with my Master’s degree in Counseling in 2004 and continuing through more than two decades of work supporting adults through transition, decision-making, and emotionally complex experiences. Throughout my career, I have worked closely with individuals as they examined what has shaped them, clarified what matters most, and determined meaningful next steps.
Across roles and settings, I have consistently served as a steady, grounding presence for people navigating difficult conversations and relational complexity.
These experiences inform my work with couples today, allowing me to combine empathy with practical tools and a deep respect for the complexity of relationships — especially when paths feel uncertain or are unfolding in unexpected ways.
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Communication from DePauw University (IN), a Master’s degree in Counseling from Indiana State University, and a Doctorate in Education from DePaul University (IL).
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Ohio and currently practice under the supervision of Mark Kaplafka, LPCC-S.
